Reflexology is a comprehensive form of total therapy, addressing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual through working the Reflexes of the feet and hands. There are many theories on how reflexology works, however a consensus has formed around the Contemporary Inclusive Theory. This states that whenever reflexes (nerve endings bundled with connective tissue and blood vessels) are worked, the nervous, lymphatic, circulatory, sensory, and fascial (joint/muscle) systems are affected.

Reflexologists work reflexes found in the hands, but primarily will work the feet. The non-intrusive nature of this therapy, coupled with the low requirements for set-up allows for a session to take place almost anywhere. The therapist can even educate the client on simple maneuvers to self care their hands and feet to produce a specific outcome.

Reflexology is different from massage in that massage focuses primarily on the muscles and fascia, whereas reflexology is focused on reflex points and their relation to the rest of the body.

Massage and Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy can help alleviate a lot of different pains, however, if they continue to return chronically, reflexology might help discover what part of the body is causing the chronic pain. This can help to direct a more effective treatment plan as well as assist in more total and lasting recovery when combining Reflexology with other therapies, to include massage.
